Stem Cell

7 Clarinets, 2008

Duration: 10’ 30”

Stem Cell, a piece for seven clarinets spread evenly throughout a stereo field, is built upon a single, simple gesture that is heard at the beginning and repeated for the duration of the composition. Though the cell is replicated and subsequently transformed, and its identity and individuality may be masked, its initial form is always present somewhere in the texture. The performer is asked to sublimate individual identity as well, seamlessly blending into the ensemble, or, in a recording, blending with replicated versions of himself.

Stem Cell was written for, and is dedicated to, Ronald van Spaendonck.
